Soft, fluffy, and golden on the outside, this homemade frybread is delicious served with savory toppings or enjoyed warm with honey.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1½ cups warm water, approximately
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions

  1. Make the dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Gradually add the warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms. You may need slightly more or less water.
  3. Knead gently for 3–5 minutes, until the dough is smooth. Don’t overwork it.
  4. Cover and let the dough rest for 20–30 minutes.
  5. Divide the dough into 8–10 equal pieces.
  6. Roll or gently stretch each piece into a round about ¼ inch thick. Make a small hole in the center if desired.
  7. Heat about 1 inch of oil in a deep skillet to approximately 350°F (175°C).
  8. Fry the bread one at a time for about 1–2 minutes per side, until puffed and golden brown.
  9. Remove and drain on paper towels.
