Soft, fluffy, and golden on the outside, this homemade frybread is delicious served with savory toppings or enjoyed warm with honey.
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1½ cups warm water, approximately
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions
- Make the dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the warm water, mixing until a soft dough forms. You may need slightly more or less water.
- Knead gently for 3–5 minutes, until the dough is smooth. Don’t overwork it.
- Cover and let the dough rest for 20–30 minutes.
- Divide the dough into 8–10 equal pieces.
- Roll or gently stretch each piece into a round about ¼ inch thick. Make a small hole in the center if desired.
- Heat about 1 inch of oil in a deep skillet to approximately 350°F (175°C).
- Fry the bread one at a time for about 1–2 minutes per side, until puffed and golden brown.
- Remove and drain on paper towels.
