Jewel grew up on an Alabama farm, and her mom made this every Sunday. It’s a simple, old-fashioned Southern favorite—creamy sweet potatoes topped with a buttery pecan crumble.

Ingredients

For the sweet potato filling:

  • 1.5 kg sweet potatoes
  • ½ cup butter, melted
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup milk or evaporated milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ½ tsp nutmeg
  • ½ tsp salt

For the topping:

  • Âľ cup chopped pecans
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 tbsp butter, softened
  • ½ tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Cook the sweet potatoes:
    Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into chunks. Boil in salted water for about 15–20 minutes, until fork-tender. Drain well.
  2. Make the filling:
    Mash the sweet potatoes until smooth. Add melted butter, brown sugar, eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix until creamy.
  3. Prepare the topping:
    In a bowl, combine pecans, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and softened butter. Mix until the mixture becomes crumbly.
  4. Assemble:
    Spread the sweet potato mixture into a greased 9Ă—13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle the pecan topping evenly over the top.
  5. Bake:
    Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes, until hot and golden on top.
  6. Serve:
    Let it rest for about 5–10 minutes, then serve warm.

🍯 Southern Tip

For an extra-old-fashioned Alabama flavor, drizzle a little maple syrup or honey over the sweet potatoes before adding the pecan topping.
