🍠Alabama Farm-Style Sweet Potato Casserole
Jewel grew up on an Alabama farm, and her mom made this every Sunday. It’s a simple, old-fashioned Southern favorite—creamy sweet potatoes topped with a buttery pecan crumble.
Ingredients
For the sweet potato filling:
- 1.5 kg sweet potatoes
- ½ cup butter, melted
- ½ cup brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup milk or evaporated milk
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ½ tsp nutmeg
- ½ tsp salt
For the topping:
- Âľ cup chopped pecans
- ½ cup brown sugar
- ½ cup all-purpose flour
- 4 tbsp butter, softened
- ½ tsp cinnamon
Instructions
- Cook the sweet potatoes:
Peel and cut the sweet potatoes into chunks. Boil in salted water for about 15–20 minutes, until fork-tender. Drain well. - Make the filling:
Mash the sweet potatoes until smooth. Add melted butter, brown sugar, eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Mix until creamy. - Prepare the topping:
In a bowl, combine pecans, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and softened butter. Mix until the mixture becomes crumbly. - Assemble:
Spread the sweet potato mixture into a greased 9Ă—13-inch baking dish. Sprinkle the pecan topping evenly over the top. - Bake:
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes, until hot and golden on top. - Serve:
Let it rest for about 5–10 minutes, then serve warm.

For an extra-old-fashioned Alabama flavor, drizzle a little maple syrup or honey over the sweet potatoes before adding the pecan topping.
