Fried Mushrooms

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound whole mushrooms, cleaned and stems trimmed
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions:

  1. Place the cleaned mushrooms in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Let them soak for 15 to 20 minutes so the coating sticks well.
  2. In another bowl, mix the flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper.
  3. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or heavy pot over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
  4. Remove the mushrooms from the buttermilk, letting the excess drip off, then coat them well in the flour and cornmeal mixture. Press lightly so the coating sticks.
  5. Fry the mushrooms in batches for 3 to 4 minutes, turning as needed, until golden brown and crispy. Do not overcrowd the pan.
  6. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a plate lined with paper towels to drain.
  7. Serve hot with ranch dressing, spicy mayo, or your favorite dipping sauce.
