Fried Mushrooms
Ingredients:
- 1 pound whole mushrooms, cleaned and stems trimmed
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper, optional
- Vegetable oil, for frying
Instructions:
- Place the cleaned mushrooms in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over them. Let them soak for 15 to 20 minutes so the coating sticks well.
- In another bowl, mix the flour, cornmeal, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and cayenne pepper.
- Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or heavy pot over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- Remove the mushrooms from the buttermilk, letting the excess drip off, then coat them well in the flour and cornmeal mixture. Press lightly so the coating sticks.
- Fry the mushrooms in batches for 3 to 4 minutes, turning as needed, until golden brown and crispy. Do not overcrowd the pan.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and place on a plate lined with paper towels to drain.
- Serve hot with ranch dressing, spicy mayo, or your favorite dipping sauce.
