What’s Really on America’s School Lunch Trays? 🇺🇸🍎
Back-to-school season is here — and millions of American children are heading back to the cafeteria. But what’s actually on their lunch trays?
Every school day, school meals play a major role in feeding children across the United States. The USDA says its school meal programs serve nearly 30 million children every day, making school breakfast and lunch an important part of the American school experience.
🍔 From Burgers to Fresh Fruit
A typical American school lunch can look very different from one school district to another. Students may find foods such as burgers, sandwiches, chicken, vegetables, fruit, milk, whole grains and other options on the menu.
And school food is changing.
Newer school nutrition initiatives are putting more emphasis on protein-rich foods, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and locally sourced ingredients. USDA’s latest back-to-school resources highlight options such as yogurt, eggs, tofu, nuts and seeds, while encouraging schools to buy more local food.
💰 School Lunch Is About More Than Food
For many families, school meals are also an important source of financial support.
The National School Lunch Program operates in nearly 100,000 public and nonprofit private schools and residential childcare institutions. In fiscal year 2024 alone, the program provided more than 4.8 billion lunches.
About 72.4% of lunches were provided free or at a reduced price in FY 2024, showing just how important school meals are for families across the country.
🥦 Are American School Lunches Getting Healthier?
That’s one of the biggest questions surrounding school food.
The USDA has been updating school nutrition standards, with a greater focus on nutritious foods and better meal patterns. The agency has also announced its “Harvest to Hallways” initiative, which aims to connect American farmers with schools, improve school kitchen infrastructure and help schools serve more nutrient-dense meals.
So while the classic image of an American school lunch may be a burger, fries and milk, today’s school cafeterias are increasingly trying to put more nutritious choices on the tray.
