Homemade Mohnkuchen

๐Ÿงพ Ingredients

For the dough (base):

  • 250 g flour
  • 100 g sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 125 g butter (soft)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt

For the poppy seed filling:

  • 200 g ground poppy seeds
  • 500 ml milk
  • 80โ€“100 g sugar
  • 1 packet vanilla sugar (or 1 tsp vanilla extract)
  • 40 g semolina (or cornstarch)
  • 50 g butter

Optional topping (crumbs / Streusel):

  • 150 g flour
  • 100 g sugar
  • 100 g butter

1. Prepare the dough

  1. Mix flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Add butter and egg, then knead into a smooth dough.
  3. Press into a greased baking pan (about 24โ€“26 cm).
  4. Chill in the fridge for ~20 minutes.

2. Make the poppy seed filling

  1. Heat milk, sugar, vanilla, and butter in a saucepan.
  2. Stir in the poppy seeds.
  3. Add semolina (or cornstarch) and cook until thickened.
  4. Let it cool slightly.

3. Optional streusel topping

  • Mix flour, sugar, and butter with your fingers until crumbly.

4. Assemble

  1. Spread the poppy seed filling evenly over the dough.
  2. Add streusel on top (optional but recommended).

5. Bake

  • Bake at 180ยฐC for about 35โ€“40 minutes until golden.
