Here is a recipe for ham and cheese on toast.
Ingredients (enough for two people)
- You will need four slices of bread. You can use white bread, sourdough bread or any other kind of bread you like.
- You will need four slices of ham.
- You will need four slices of cheese (Gruyère, Emmental or Cheddar are all good options).
- You will need two tablespoons of softened butter.
- You can add one teaspoon of mustard, but this is optional. Dijon mustard is the best type to use.
- You can add 2 tablespoons of béchamel sauce if you want the sauce to be extra rich.
Instructions
Turn on the oven or grill.
- Put the oven on at 200°C (390°F) or turn the grill/broiler on high.
Get the bread ready.
- Spread a little butter on one side of each bread slice.
- Spread a thin layer of mustard on the inside, if you like.
Put the toast together.
- Place a slice of bread, with the buttered side down.
- Add 1–2 slices of ham.
- Add 1–2 slices of cheese.
- Put another slice of bread on top, with the buttered side facing up.
You can upgrade to a Croque Monsieur style option.

- Spread a spoonful of béchamel sauce on top of the sandwich.
- Sprinkle extra cheese over the top for a golden crust.
Cook
- Put it on a baking tray and cook in the oven or on a grill for 8–10 minutes. This will take the cheese to melt and bubble, and make the bread go golden.
Serve
- Slice diagonally and enjoy hot with a side salad or fries.
