Ham And Cheese On Toast

Here is a recipe for ham and cheese on toast.

Ingredients (enough for two people)

  • You will need four slices of bread. You can use white bread, sourdough bread or any other kind of bread you like.
  • You will need four slices of ham.
  • You will need four slices of cheese (Gruyère, Emmental or Cheddar are all good options).
  • You will need two tablespoons of softened butter.
  • You can add one teaspoon of mustard, but this is optional. Dijon mustard is the best type to use.
  • You can add 2 tablespoons of béchamel sauce if you want the sauce to be extra rich.

Instructions

Turn on the oven or grill.

  • Put the oven on at 200°C (390°F) or turn the grill/broiler on high.

Get the bread ready.

  • Spread a little butter on one side of each bread slice.
  • Spread a thin layer of mustard on the inside, if you like.

Put the toast together.

  • Place a slice of bread, with the buttered side down.
  • Add 1–2 slices of ham.
  • Add 1–2 slices of cheese.
  • Put another slice of bread on top, with the buttered side facing up.

You can upgrade to a Croque Monsieur style option.

  • Spread a spoonful of béchamel sauce on top of the sandwich.
  • Sprinkle extra cheese over the top for a golden crust.

Cook

  • Put it on a baking tray and cook in the oven or on a grill for 8–10 minutes. This will take the cheese to melt and bubble, and make the bread go golden.

Serve

  • Slice diagonally and enjoy hot with a side salad or fries.

👉 Variation: Add a fried egg on top to make a Croque Madame. 🍳
