Yam Balls Recipe (Nigerian Style)
Servings: 6–8 balls
Ingredients
• Yam – ½ medium tuber (about 500g or 2 cups mashed)
• Butter – 2 tablespoons (30g)
• Milk – 2 tablespoons (optional, for creaminess)
• Eggs – 2 (1 for mixing, 1 for coating)
• Onion – ½ small, finely chopped
• Scotch bonnet (ata rodo) – 1, finely chopped (optional for spice)
• Salt – ½ teaspoon
• Seasoning cube – 1
• Flour – ½ cup (60g) for coating
• Bread crumbs – 1 cup (100g) for coating
• Vegetable oil – for deep frying
Instructions
Peel, cut, and boil yam in salted water until soft.
Drain and mash with butter and milk until smooth.
Add in chopped onion, pepper, seasoning cube, and one egg, then mix well until combined.
Form small round balls or oval shapes with your hands.
Beat the second egg in a bowl.
Dip each yam ball first in flour, then into the beaten egg, and finally roll in bread crumbs until well coated.
Heat oil in a deep pan and fry yam balls on medium heat until golden brown.
Remove and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with ketchup, mayo, or spicy sauce.
