Southern Fried Cabbage with Bacon

🥓 Southern Fried Cabbage with Bacon

Ingredients:

  • 6 slices bacon, chopped

  • 1 medium head of cabbage, cored and sliced into strips

  • 1 medium onion, chopped

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

  • 1–2 tbsp apple cider vinegar (optional, for brightness)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the bacon: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped bacon until crispy. Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon and set aside, leaving the bacon grease in the pan.

  2. Sauté the aromatics: Add the chopped onion to the skillet and cook for 2–3 minutes, until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds.

  3. Add the cabbage: Add the sliced cabbage to the pan, stirring to coat it in the bacon fat. Cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender but still slightly crisp.

  4. Season & finish: Stir in the cooked bacon, season with salt and pepper, and (if desired) add a splash of apple cider vinegar for a tangy finish.

  5. Serve: Serve hot as a side dish with fried chicken, pork chops, or cornbread.

Tip: For extra flavor, add a pinch of smoked paprika or red pepper flakes.
