🥪 Classic Liverwurst Sandwich
A hearty old-fashioned sandwich made with creamy liverwurst, tangy mustard, crisp pickles, and fresh onion on hearty seeded bread. Simple, filling, and packed with nostalgic deli-style flavor.
Ingredients
Makes 2 sandwiches
- 8 slices rye, seeded rye, or country-style bread
- 8 oz liverwurst, sliced about ¼-inch thick
- 2–3 tbsp yellow mustard
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- ¼ small yellow or white onion, very thinly sliced
- ½ cup dill pickle slices
- 2–3 lettuce leaves, optional
- Black pepper, to taste
- 1 tbsp softened butter, optional
Instructions
- Prepare the bread:
Lay the bread slices on a clean work surface. Lightly butter them if desired. - Add the condiments:
Spread mayonnaise on one side of the bread and yellow mustard on the other. - Layer the liverwurst:
Arrange the liverwurst slices generously over the bread. For a sandwich like the one pictured, don’t be shy with the liverwurst—use a thick layer. - Add the toppings:
Top with thinly sliced onion and plenty of dill pickle slices. Add lettuce if desired and season lightly with black pepper. - Close the sandwich:
Place the second slice of bread on top and gently press the sandwich together. - Slice and serve:
Cut each sandwich in half and serve with extra pickle slices on the side.
🥒 Optional Deli-Style Upgrade
For extra flavor, mix 1 tablespoon mayonnaise + 1 teaspoon yellow mustard + 1 teaspoon pickle juice and spread it on the bread. You can also add a few thin slices of tomato or a sprinkle of paprika.
Prep Time :Â 10 minutes
Servings ; 2 hearty sandwiches
Tip
For the best texture, chill the liverwurst before slicing. Thinly sliced onion and crisp, cold dill pickles provide a nice contrast to the rich, creamy liverwurst.
