Fried Onion Rings

Ingredients:

  • 2 large onions, sliced into thick rings
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup cold water or milk
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Instructions:

1. Slice the onions into thick rings and separate them. Place the rings in a bowl and cover with buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 20 minutes to soften and enhance flavor.
2.In a bowl, mix the flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and baking powder. Gradually whisk in the cold water or milk until you get a smooth batter.
3.Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
4. Remove the onion rings from the buttermilk, let the excess drip off, then dip them into the batter, coating each ring evenly.
5. Carefully place the coated onion rings into the hot oil. Fry in batches for 2 to 3 minutes, turning as needed, until golden brown and crispy.
6. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
7. Serve hot with ketchup, ranch, or a spicy dipping sauce.
