Slow Cooker Swiss Steak Recipe: A Comforting Classic for Every Table

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds beef round steak (about ¾-inch thick)

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 green bell pepper, sliced (optional)

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes (with juice)

  • 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce

  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme

  • ½ cup beef broth

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Steak:

    • Cut the beef round steak into serving-size pieces.

    • Season both sides with salt and pepper, then dredge in flour, shaking off excess.

  2. Brown the Meat:

    • In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium-high heat.

    • Brown the steak pieces on both sides for about 2–3 minutes per side.

    • Transfer the browned meat to your slow cooker.

  3. Add Vegetables and Sauce:

    • Layer the onion, bell pepper, and garlic over the meat.

    • In a bowl, mix together diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, thyme, and beef broth.

    • Pour the mixture evenly over the steak and vegetables.

  4. Cook:

    • Cover and cook on Low for 7–8 hours or High for 3–4 hours, until the steak is fork-tender.

  5. Serve:

    • Serve the Swiss steak over mashed potatoes, egg noodles, or rice.

    • Spoon the rich tomato gravy on top for a comforting, homestyle meal.
