Orange Drop Cookies (Christmas)

My husband still talks about the orange cookies his mom used to make when he was little. Like, he’d bring them up randomly—”Remember those soft orange ones? With the glaze?”—and I’d just nod because I had no idea what he meant.
Then last Christmas, his mom handed me a worn recipe card. “He’s been asking for these since he moved out,” she said, smiling. Orange Drop Cookies. The ones he’d been dreaming about for years.
I made them last weekend, and the second that orange glaze hit the warm cookies, the whole kitchen smelled like his childhood. He walked in, stopped mid-step, and just stared at the tray. Didn’t say a word. Just picked one up, took a bite, and closed his eyes.
“These are it,” he whispered. “Exactly like hers.”
They’re soft, pillowy, melt-on-your-tongue perfect. The cookie itself is tender and lightly sweet, and that orange glaze? Buttery, citrusy, with just enough sweetness to make you reach for another one before you’ve even finished the first.
He ate four in one sitting. I’m not even mad about it.
**INGREDIENTS:**
*For the Cookies:*
– ¾ cup sugar
– ⅔ cup shortening
– 2 eggs
– 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
– Zest of 1 orange
– 2 cups all-purpose flour
– 1½ teaspoons baking powder
– ½ teaspoon salt
– ⅓ cup fresh orange juice
*For the Orange Glaze:*
– 2 cups powdered sugar
– 3–4 tablespoons fresh orange juice
– 1 tablespoon melted butter
– ½ teaspoon orange zest
**INSTRUCTIONS:**
Preheat your oven to 350°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, cream together the sugar and shortening until light and fluffy.
Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla and orange zest.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients in three parts, alternating with the orange juice. Mix until just combined—don’t overmix.
Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
Bake for 10–12 minutes, until the edges are just barely golden and the tops look set but still soft.
Let them cool on the pan for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.
While the cookies cool, whisk together the powdered sugar, orange juice, melted butter, and orange zest until smooth and glossy.
Spoon the glaze generously over each cookie while they’re still slightly warm. Let the glaze set for about 10 minutes.
Try not to eat them all before anyone else gets one. (I failed at this part.)
These cookies taste like a hug from someone’s kitchen twenty years ago. Soft, sweet, and impossibly comforting
