Creamy potato and ham gratin — a cheesy, comforting bake that’s perfect for a quick dinner.
Ingredients (serves 4):
- 4–5 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
- 200 g of diced cooked ham
- 1 cup (240 ml) double cream
- 1 cup (240 ml) milk
- 1 cup of grated cheese (Gruyère, Cheddar or a mixture)
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon of butter for greasing.
- 1 tsp thyme (fresh or dried)
- Salt and pepper to taste.
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F). Grease a baking dish with butter.
- Layer potatoes and ham: Arrange half of the potato slices in the dish. Sprinkle half of the ham over them and season with salt, pepper and thyme. Repeat with the rest.
- Make the cream mixture: In a small pan, warm the cream, milk and garlic until it just starts to simmer. Pour evenly over the potatoes.
- Add cheese: Sprinkle the grated cheese over the top.
- Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for a further 15–20 minutes until golden and bubbling.
- Serve: Garnish with extra thyme and serve hot with crusty bread or a side salad.
