Creamy Potato And Ham Gratin

Creamy potato and ham gratin — a cheesy, comforting bake that’s perfect for a quick dinner.

Ingredients (serves 4):

  • 4–5 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 200 g of diced cooked ham
  • 1 cup (240 ml) double cream
  • 1 cup (240 ml) milk
  • 1 cup of grated cheese (Gruyère, Cheddar or a mixture)
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of butter for greasing.
  • 1 tsp thyme (fresh or dried)
  • Salt and pepper to taste.

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F). Grease a baking dish with butter.
  2. Layer potatoes and ham: Arrange half of the potato slices in the dish. Sprinkle half of the ham over them and season with salt, pepper and thyme. Repeat with the rest.
  3. Make the cream mixture: In a small pan, warm the cream, milk and garlic until it just starts to simmer. Pour evenly over the potatoes.
  4. Add cheese: Sprinkle the grated cheese over the top.
  5. Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for a further 15–20 minutes until golden and bubbling.
  6. Serve: Garnish with extra thyme and serve hot with crusty bread or a side salad.
