Hamburger Gravy
Ingredients:
1 lb ground beef (80/20 preferred)
1 small onion, finely chopped (optional, but recommended)
2 cloves of garlic, minced (optional)
2 tbsp butter (if the beef is lean).
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2–2.5 cups of warm beef broth
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
½ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
½ teaspoon black pepper
½ teaspoon of onion powder (optional)
¼ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
Optional add-ins: sliced mushrooms or a splash of cream.
Instructions:
In a large frying pan over a medium heat, brown the minced beef until fully cooked.
Add the onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until soft. Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
If needed, add butter to the skillet.
Sprinkle the flour over the beef and stir well. Cook for 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
Slowly pour in the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps forming.
Add the Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and any other optional seasonings.
Simmer for 5–10 minutes until the sauce is thick and rich. Adjust the seasoning to taste.
For extra creaminess, stir in 2–3 tablespoons of heavy cream (optional).
To serve:
Spoon a generous mound of mashed potatoes onto a plate.
Ladle hot hamburger gravy over the top.
Serve immediately.
Tips & variations:
Add browned mushrooms to the gravy for a steakhouse flavour.
Swap beef for ground turkey and add extra butter for richness.
Serve with buttered peas, green beans or cornbread.
Leftovers reheat beautifully!
