Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)

  • Salt & black pepper

  • 4 burger buns

  • 4 slices cheese (American, cheddar, or Swiss)

  • Butter or oil for pan/grill

Optional Toppings

Lettuce • tomato • onion • pickles • bacon • ketchup • mustard • mayo

Instructions

Form the Patties

  1. Divide beef into 4 loose balls (don’t overwork).

  2. Gently flatten into patties slightly wider than the buns.

  3. Make a thumb indent in the center (prevents puffing).

  4. Season generously with salt & pepper.

Cook

Grill or Skillet (medium-high heat):

  1. Heat pan or grill; lightly oil.

  2. Cook patties 3–4 minutes per side.

  3. Add cheese during last minute; cover to melt.

  4. Toast buns in butter until golden.

Build the Burger

Bottom bun → patty → cheese → toppings → sauce → top bun

Pro Tips

  • Don’t press the burgers while cooking (keeps them juicy).

  • Season right before cooking for best texture.

  • For smash burgers: press thin in a hot skillet and cook fast.
