Southern Lasagna

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef
1/2 lb ground pork or breakfast sausage
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp Italian seasoning
1/2 tsp sugar
1 jar (24 oz) tomato sauce
1 can (14 oz) crushed tomatoes
12 lasagna noodles, cooked and drained
1 container (15 oz) ricotta cheese
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 large egg
2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley or dried parsley
2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add ground beef, ground pork or sausage, and onion. Cook until browned, breaking up the meat. Add garlic, salt, pepper, paprika, Italian seasoning, and sugar. Stir well.

Pour in tomato sauce and crushed tomatoes. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.

In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese, egg, Parmesan cheese, and parsley until smooth.

Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a baking dish. Add a layer of lasagna noodles, followed by ricotta mixture, mozzarella cheese, and meat sauce. Repeat layers until ingredients are used, ending with meat sauce and mozzarella on top.

Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 15 minutes until bubbly and lightly browned.

Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
