Cinnamon Roll French Toast

Ingredients

For the French Toast

  • 6 cinnamon rolls (homemade or store-bought)

  • 3 large eggs

  • ¾ cup milk

  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1 tsp cinnamon

  • 1 tbsp sugar (optional)

  • Pinch of salt

  • Butter or oil for cooking

For Topping (optional but amazing)

  • Powdered sugar

  • Maple syrup

  • Cream cheese icing (from the cinnamon rolls or homemade)

  • Fresh fruit (strawberries or bananas)

Instructions

1. Prep the Cinnamon Rolls

Cut each cinnamon roll into thick slices or quarters. Let them sit out for about 10 minutes so they dry slightly — this helps them soak up the batter better.

2. Make the Custard

In a bowl, whisk together:

  • Eggs

  • Milk

  • Vanilla

  • Cinnamon

  • Sugar

  • Salt

3. Dip & Soak

Dip each piece of cinnamon roll into the egg mixture.
Let it soak for 10–15 seconds per side so it becomes soft but not soggy.

4. Cook

Heat a skillet over medium heat and melt a little butter.
Cook the soaked cinnamon roll pieces for 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown and slightly crisp.

5. Serve

Top with:

  • Warm cream cheese icing

  • Maple syrup

  • Powdered sugar

  • Fresh fruit

Serve immediately while warm and soft.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use day-old cinnamon rolls if possible — they hold their shape better.

  • Keep the heat medium, not high, so the inside cooks before the outside burns.

  • If cooking a big batch, keep finished pieces warm in the oven at 90°C (200°F).

Fun Variations

  • Stuffed Version – Slice rolls in half and add cream cheese in the middle.

  • Baked Version – Place soaked pieces in a baking dish and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 18–22 minutes.

  • Apple Pie Style – Add sautéed apples and caramel sauce on top.

  • Chocolate Drizzle – Finish with melted chocolate for a dessert-style twist.
