Homemade King Hawaiian Rolls Or Loaf

🍍 Homemade King Hawaiian–Style Rolls or Loaf

Ingredients

  • Âľ cup pineapple juice (warm, not hot)

  • ÂĽ cup milk (warm)

  • â…“ cup sugar

  • 2ÂĽ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 large eggs (room temp)

  • 4 tbsp butter, melted (plus more for brushing)

  • 4–4½ cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast
    In a large bowl, combine warm pineapple juice, warm milk, and sugar.
    Sprinkle yeast on top. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.

  2. Mix the dough
    Add eggs, melted butter, and salt. Mix well.
    Gradually add flour, mixing until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.

  3. Knead
    Knead by hand 8–10 minutes or with a mixer 5–6 minutes, until smooth and elastic.

  4. First rise
    Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1–1½ hours, until doubled.

🥖 For Rolls

  1. Shape
    Divide dough into 12–15 equal pieces. Shape into balls and place in a greased baking dish.

  2. Second rise
    Cover and let rise 30–45 minutes, until puffy.

  3. Bake
    Bake at 180°C / 350°F for 18–22 minutes, until golden.

  4. Finish
    Brush hot rolls with melted butter.

🍞 For a Loaf

  1. Shape
    Shape dough into a loaf and place in a greased loaf pan.

  2. Second rise
    Let rise 45–60 minutes, until dough crowns the pan.

  3. Bake
    Bake at 180°C / 350°F for 28–35 minutes.

  4. Finish
    Brush with melted butter while warm.

Tips for authentic softness

  • Don’t add too much flour—slightly sticky dough = softer bread

  • Use all-purpose flour, not bread flour

  • Brush with butter twice (once right out of oven, once 5 minutes later)
